Legalization of Drugs
SURE WANT TO LEGALIZE DRUGS? In the century of freedom that we are living in, we have started to face this new worldââ¬â¢s new problems and new situations such as legalization of drugs. Many people are having dilemmas about drug legalization coming between ethical values and right of freedom. However, surely forbidding something for peopleââ¬â¢s and communitiesââ¬â¢ own benefits doesnââ¬â¢t go along with our perception of democracy and freedom. What freedom means is being able to do whatever individuals want without disturbing othersââ¬â¢ rights and freedoms. Then we should mainly focus on the ââ¬Å"â⬠¦without disturbing othersââ¬â¢ rights and freedoms. â⬠part . Therefore , even if we are not the oneââ¬â¢s that are capable of legislating , governments should care about our voices and be careful about this subject; because of legalizing drugs and giving people the right individually use of drugs regarding publicââ¬â¢s rights and freedom will cause lot s of consequences and problems. Therefore , in this precise situation , drugs should not be legalized in Turkey. Legalization of drugs will bring some problems with itself.First of all, legalization of drugs will increase drug usage and the number of drug addicts as it will be stabled in our daily lives with power of laws. Therefore drug usage will seem normal as everyone will have right to use it, and people will find enough confidence to try it even tough they donââ¬â¢t really want to use it , but fur to curiosity. If we look into our past legalization experiences such as legalization of alcohol or smoking , we can easily see the correlation between the number of addicts and legalization of additional materials.Secondly, increase in drug usage will increase the crime rate related to drugs. We are going to be able to the violence movie scenes in our streets as underground drug wars will spread to aboveground, the increase in drug addicts will increase the number of people in nee d of drugs, and it will occur the easiest way of drug afford: violence. As Magnnins (n. d. ) stated in his article although drug legalization will reduce the cost of drugs it will feed the habit. Therefore, the crimes with related to drugs will increase. (pg. 3-4).Lastly , drug legalization will damage the social relations among in public. The drug users are mostly psychologically unhealthy people as they do not care about anything but drugs , and due to their lack of logical thinking. The careless attitude that drug addicts exhibit in their social lives could be managed for a time by their relatives, but how long this relatives can stand this as more and more people become addicts? Specifically, Turkish traditional and religious norms do not fit to legalization of drug usage and this will lead us to having social problems. In such a country like Turkey that has population is formed by more than %95 Muslim people , it is hard to expect everyone to obey a law which is strictly forbidd en in their holly book. The ones who are for legalization of drugs mostly have same supporting ideas that they see enough evidence for drug legalization. Firstly, as legalization will make drug usage legal and provide some laws, it will put drug usage under government control. They assume that government control will help drug users as governments will be able to keep track of drug usage, put quotes and even can generate income by putting taxes. However, they miss some really important points like government control will not only be unable to stop drug usage also creates some responsibilities for Turkish government. If we look into the alcohol and smoke usage in Turkey , we can easily see that governments can not control drug usage by quotes and taxes. In addition, government control issue will bring problems for the Turkish government such as building rehabilitation centers for addicts and governmental care and responsibility for drug usage as Gargaro(1996) stated in her article â⠬Å"notice all the regulation and laws surrounding cigarettes?Legal drugs means MORE LAWS , MORE REGULATION AND MORE GOVERNMENT, higher taxes and higher insurance rates. â⬠(pg:3). The second point that drug legalization fans cry is ââ¬Å"Drug usage is an individual choiceâ⬠which actually means to do whatever individual likes ,which is a right given by freedom , and drugs should be legalized as alcohol and smoke usage in Turkey. We understand this also from Blockââ¬â¢s(2000) words which mainly points that not legalizing drugs means controlling individuals opinions and rights(pg:4-5). Yet, regard that it is a social issue more than individuality problem. As drug users physiologic situations donââ¬â¢t let them think critically, it will lead us to have more troubles in the community. As Maginnis(n. d. ) claims drug usage is not a personal issue as drug usersââ¬â¢ families and society also endures the consequences like the baby on its drug user motherââ¬â¢s stomach (pg:10). To sum up, drug legalization is a sensitive situation, and the ones that stand for drug legalization should think critically, take into account the consequences of it such as effects of increasing number of addicts on ociety like increasing crime rate, possible damages on social relationships before they yelling ââ¬Å"legalization will put it under government controlâ⬠and ââ¬Å"drug usage is an individual choiceâ⬠. They should mainly not regard the meaning of freedom: being able to whatever individuals would like to do WITHOUT DUSTURBING OTHERSââ¬â¢ RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS. REFENANCES: * Block , W. (2000) . Juxtaposition in Henry IV Part 1 Essay
William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Henry IV is about the reign of Henry IV, formerly known as Henry Bolingbroke. Here, King Henry is planning a crusade however, his kingship is experiencing a turmoil because of the rebellions against his leadership. It is a historical play that generally creates studies regarding its deals with socio-political issues. Several themes were tackled such as honor. Though it is an undisputed fact that honor is something equivocal, several attempts were still done in order to delineate it. Several characters on the play mentioned the word honor. As you read the play, you will get the various notions and actions of different characters about it. However, having all those different notions and actions were part of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s intention of revealing the irony of honor. In Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Henry IV, it shows that honor depends greatly on the individualââ¬â¢s personal aspirations and morals. It was significantly emphasized as he juxtaposed the characters of Harry, King Henry IVââ¬â¢s son, and Hotspur, the Earl of Northumberlandââ¬â¢s son, both of whom are potential successors to the King. Harryââ¬â¢s character is commendable with his wit by concealing his true nature and identity. On his first soliloquy he expresses that though he spends most of his time with bad companions like the robbers, etc. , he is silently working on a political agenda. He has true values were in a way reflected as he reimbursed what his friends stole. He is just doing that in order to lower the peopleââ¬â¢s expectations from him so that when the right time arrives, he would astonish everyone as he unveils his true self. With that, he will be able to gain King Henryââ¬â¢s affection and the peopleââ¬â¢s admiration. According to Mabillard, Amanda, ââ¬Å" Halââ¬â¢s first soliloquy that this is merely an act, he is acutely aware of the bad company he keeps, but prefers to show his true colors when necessary, wisely concluding that because expectations of him are so low, his accomplishments when shown will shine that much brighter. â⬠Harry also wished to be appraised due to his own efforts and principles and not because of the crown on his head. For him, a noble deed goes along with honor. However, his concept of honor was dubious when he deemed that he can budge Hotspurââ¬â¢s honor by killing him. His concept of honor was also probed because of the way he treats and put down his friend Falstaff. Mabillard also added that, ââ¬Å"Halââ¬â¢s envy of Hotspur suggests he is not completely confident, since Hal needs to compare himself to others. When called to fight the rebellion, Hal comes of age, shedding his apathetic ways, even enlisting Falstaff his thieving friend to fight, symbolic of Hal finally accepting and assuming responsibility for himself and others. â⬠For the case of Hotspur, a military man with impulsive actions, honor connotes winning in battles and defending oneââ¬â¢s reputation against all odds. Fallstaff, the character Harlittz regards as, a person who ââ¬Å"â⬠¦is represented as a liar, a braggart, a coward, a glutton, etc and yet we are not offended but delighted with him; for he is all these as much to amuse others as to gratify himself,â⬠regarded Honor as something useless and wasted that does no one any good. Falstaff also juxtaposes honor with violence. For Henry IV however, honor means the good of his people and kingdom. He also believes that honor belonged to the rightful leader of the kingdom. This caused him the dilemma because of the way he was able to gain his current crown, usurping Richard IIââ¬â¢s throne and plotting his death. Besides the essence of honor, the play also juxtaposes the societyââ¬â¢s class differences and the playââ¬â¢s north- south theme. As Stuart Hampton- Reeves stated, ââ¬Å"The York scenes are particularly significant, as they give a regional focus to the play in the north, in much the same way that, in 2 Henry VI, the Kentish rebellion of Jack Cade gives a southern regional focus. There is, in fact, a subtle north/south theme running through 3 Henry VI: the second line of the play pursues ââ¬Å"the horseman of the northâ⬠and there are repeated references to north/south divisions. Here, the ESC got it wrong; the ESC portrayed the Yorkists as bluff northerners, and the Lancastrians as haughty southerners, but the play makes it clear several times that Yorkââ¬â¢s power base is actually in the south, in Kent and London, whilst Henry, with the Duchy of Lancaster and the might of Northumberland, holds the North. Henry is defeated at St. Albans, in the south; York loses the next battle because he is isolated in the northern city of York. Battles take place around York, there are scenes in its castle, the Duke of Yorkââ¬â¢s head is mounted on its walls,â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ For the societyââ¬â¢s class, the play also shows the upper class and the royalties as the story revolves on the palace. And the same time, it also shows the low class citizens such as the robbers, townsââ¬â¢ people, etc. at Boarââ¬â¢s Tavern. It also juxtaposes the characters of Henry IV and Falstaff as they act as mentor and father to Harry. Two men who are different in class, upbringing, virtue and principles are both playing the same role to Harry. Besides juxtaposition on the theme and characters, there were also several juxtapositions in terms of the scene. Just like in the ending of the play Richard II and the beginning of Henry IVââ¬â¢s part 1. Wherein, on Richard IIââ¬â¢s ending, Henry is already proclaimed as the king and he is about to start his kinship. However, in the beginning of Henry IV, there is still the plan of Henry of having a crusade. As Mabillard noted, ââ¬Å"While it is true that these men all have personal reasons for rebelling, we cannot help but think that there is divine guidance at work, fulfilling Richardââ¬â¢s prophesy, causing Henryââ¬â¢s reign to be tumultuous. The structure of the plays certainly supports this theory. Richard II died in 1400, and Shakespeare ends Richard II with Henry just beginning his reign. But at the start of Henry IV, Part I, it seems that no time has passed since the death of Richard. The excursion to the Holy Land is still in Henryââ¬â¢s mind, and the action seems to take up right where it left off in Richard II. â⬠The scene wherein Harry and Hotspur will have their combat is take place next to the similar encounter between Douglas and Falstaff. However, the encounter between Harry and Hotspur is embellished with heroic talks and brave action and intense emotion while the encounter between Douglas and Fallstaff is embellished with talks about cowardice and full comic lines. Being a play that was written several years ago, and being based on a story that happened on the years 1402-1403, some might have the idea that using the same juxtaposition would cause the audience to feel alienated due to the huge time span. However, the political issues narrated on the play are still very much applicable at the present period. Just the like the different views on honor, usurping of power, and war among political leaders. That is why I consider Shakespeareââ¬â¢s works as timeless. Prohibition of Alcohol - Research Paper Example Along with taste, the level of intoxication associated with the alcoholic drinks and the relaxation that a person gets by using alcohol are some other factors why people become addicted to use of such drinks. Another fact regarding use of alcohol is that it makes a person come out of depression and boredom for the time being. Social influence is another major factor behind increase in the use of alcoholic drinks in most parts of the world. If we talk about the United States of America, use of alcoholic drinks is not considered an unusual thing in the American society. People serve such drinks in parties, in functions, and in different ceremonies. The legal age for drinking, buying, and selling alcoholic drinks in the United States is over twenty-one years. An adult in the United States can vote at the age of eighteen but cannot drink before reaching the age of twenty-one (Peck 5). Excessive use of alcohol is very harmful not only for the health and mind of the person who takes such d rinks but also for the whole community because a person taking excessive alcohol has less control over mind which can make him/her harm other people physically. This is the reason why use of alcohol is banned in many parts of the world. ... However, the age restriction is not enough to reduce the number of harms associated with the consumption of alcohol. The government needs to prohibit large-scale consumption of alcohol in order to make the lives of people safe and secure. Alcohol Prohibition in the United States (1920-1933) From 1920 to 1933, alcohol was completely banned in the United States of America. The intention of the government of that time was to eliminate all businesses related to alcohol manufacturing in order to keep people away from the use of alcoholic products. American people initially welcomed the alcohol prohibition, but with the passage of time, the acceptance of prohibition turned into rejection by the people. ââ¬Å"The period began in 1920 with general acceptance by the public and ended in 1933 as the result of the publicââ¬â¢s annoyance of the law and the ever-increasing enforcement nightmareâ⬠(Graham). There were different factors, which led the governmentââ¬â¢s way towards putting ban on alcohol consumption. Some of the most influencing factors include temperance movements lead by religious denominations, campaign led by womanââ¬â¢s Christian Temperance Union and Anti-Saloon League, implementation of local alcohol prohibition laws by different states and countries throughout America, the 18th amendment, and the Volstead Act. The temperance movements were the most influencing factors behind alcohol prohibition. ââ¬Å"The Temperance movement blamed alcohol for many of society's ills, especially crime and murderâ⬠(Rosenberg). The temperance movement gained momentum with every passing day and by 1916, almost half of the states belonging to the United States prohibited the use of alcohol in those

Describe and analyze - Essay Example Being the biggest democratic country and the second most heavily populated country in the world, Indiaââ¬â¢s progress is watched with curiosity by scholars and economists. Many people believe that India may become another superpower in the world in near future itself. It should be noted that the recent recession has caused less problems to Indiaââ¬â¢s economy even though it caused many problems in America and Europe. Prominent companies are targeting India as a manufacturing destination because of the availability of cheap labor in India. Distance is no more a problem for overseas companies in targeting India because of the development of internet related business strategies. Offshoring and outsourcing like new business principles and the development of internet related business technologies helped India immensely in changing its destiny from a poor country to a prosperous country. Neither technology nor the dimensions of distance are a problem for India as far as development i s concerned. This paper analyses Indiaââ¬â¢s dimensions of distance, institutions, industrial clusters, and diffusion of technology. ââ¬Å"Distance between two countries can manifest itself along four basic dimensions: cultural, administrative, geographic, and economicâ⬠(Ghemawat, Distance Still, p.138). ... For Indians, Pakistan is a different country culturally, politically and economically whereas China is a different country in terms of politics and culture. So these countries are not in good relations with India even though they are geographically close to India. On the other hand, geographically distant countries such as America and Europe are good trade partners of India. ââ¬Å"Economists often rely on the so-called gravity theory of trade flows, which says there is a positive relationship between economic size and trade and a negative relationship between distance and tradeâ⬠(Ghemawat, Distance Still, p.138). Traditional economic principles says that it is easy to increase global trade between countries of proximity. However, India is a country, which has trade relations with even distant countries. It should be noted that Europe and America are some of the distant regions from India; yet India has strong economic relationships with these countries. In fact, India is a pro minent member country of the Group of 20 (G-20) developing nations, even though majority of the members of this group are from Europe and America. ââ¬Å"The largest IT services markets are the most advanced economies, whose per capita incomes make them distant economically from Indiaâ⬠(Ghemawat, The Cosmopolitan, p.95). For example, America and majority of the European countries are much more developed than India. These regions or countries are the largest IT services market in the world. The per capita income these countries are much higher than that of the Indians. However, it should not be forgotten that India is one of the largest service IT provider and the second largest country in terms

Therefore one of the basic needs of risk management is to study the attitude of the customers. Once the company knows as to how a customer behaves with his billing issue, it would be very clear as to how he would behave further. The methods and principles of accounting Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
The methods and principles of accounting - Essay Example Rules and principles of accounting are basically designed in such a way that they provide certain standardized frameworks which help in the assessment of the financial position of a firm or a government. Hence there may always be a difference from one country to another in the accounting practices that are followed. There can be a major influence of the accounting consequences of different kinds of available options with which the decision makers are faced with, on the final decision taken. Thereby, the choice between the different methods of accounting may not limit themselves to just the portrayal of results; they may also play a vital role in the actual shaping of future decisions including the organization's financial structuring, functioning and activities. Accounting is best known as the language of business and communicates the results of the business. As the accepted Lingua Franca in addition to being the medium of communication it also satisfies the role of understanding the existing as well as potential additions to the available literature. As with every credible language, Accountancy also has its own rules and syntax which comprises the principles on which the system is based, known as the Generally Accepted Principles (GAAP), International Accounting Standards, and US GAAP etc. forming the theoretical base of Accountancy, and the Double Entry bookkeeping for recording the transactions providing the Practical Base of the system. To communicate the necessary, vital and relevant information, the requirements of the prospective users are identified and a systematic process is adhered to resulting in the formation of "Financial Statements." They are primarily the Income Statement and the Position Statement which are popular as "Trading and Profit & Loss Account" and the "Balance Sheet" respectively. The Balance Sheet shows the financial status of a business at a given point of time. That is the reason, the heading of Balance Sheet reads as "Balance Sheet of Xxx Company as on 31st March, 20xx." The balance sheet shows the amount of funds the owner has in the business. To determine this amount, the assets owned are listed and a value is placed on them. Liabilities and their values also are listed. The difference between assets and liabilities is equal to the net worth, or the owner's equity in the business (Klinefelter, 2000). The income statement on the other hand reflects the performance of the entry over a period of time and hence it is headed as "Income Statement of Xxx Company for the year ended 31st March, 20xx." The major purposes of financial reporting are: Providing information which in turn becomes the basis for exercising decisions and actions by the potential users, Reflect the financial progress and present health of the business, Aid in the formulation of policies and procedures for the smooth and efficient conduct of the business, Enable the management to discharge their obligations and stewardship functions effectively Financial Reporting The end-users of financial statements need not necessarily be those of finance background. They might not be in a position to understand the complex technicalities of financial statement. People who do not have detailed understanding of the financial

Letters of Credit Essay Example for Free
Letters of Credit Essay The use of the letter of credit in international trade has for a long time been an easy way of carrying out business operations without really having to use the credit of the applicantââ¬â¢s bank. Letters of credit usually take the place of a bankââ¬â¢s credit and enhances the speed of transactions when used properly.[1] Usually, the letter of credit serves to give an importer of goods as well as the exporter a chance to go a head with their business transactions even when there is no real liquid money available to either party. Letters of credit, however, present very many challenges to both the exporter and the issuing bank because they are usually documents that cannot be revoked under certain circumstances and so exposes some players to a lot of risk. A key concern has been the nature of the conditions that ought to be met before such documents can be honored by the exporterââ¬â¢s bank which usually has to rely on information from the importerââ¬â¢s bank.[2] It is on the basis of the intricate issues that surround the letter of credit and its use that this paper seeks to critically discuss it especially when used in the context of international trade. Of particular interest, though, is a discussion of the undue exposure to losses and other risks on the issuer of the letter of credit, particularly in instances when the applicant or beneficiary of the letter of credit does not duly perform oneââ¬â¢s obligations or wrongfully obtains payment. The Working of a Letter of Credit From a business point of view, it is usually very important for an importer of goods and who holds an account with a local bank to seek for the financing of the bank for goods that are to be sourced from another country.[3] The reasons this is appropriate range from an ability to facilitate the business transactions and ensure a faster and timely transfer of the goods from the exporterââ¬â¢s location to that of the importer, and to reduce the costs that could be incurred in having to use other means of payment to pay for goods in another country ââ¬â means of which are not always available. Therefore, from the business point of view, a letter of credit serves to enhance the general business transactions involving international trade. Where the challenge comes in is that point when it is never drawn or requested unless there is some form of credit that needs to be transferred. Actually, the letter of credit is used as an exchange of the credit of the bank and that of the buyer. Here, issues of compliance with the terms and conditions of the letter of credit poses many challenges and risks to the issuing bank as well as the advising bank which literally transfers the credit to the exporterââ¬â¢s account. This results because of the manner in which the transactions are conducted. First, an importer in the United Kingdom orders for coffee beans from a farmer in Brazil. The farmer insists that the coffee beans can only be exported or ferried on condition that the payment for them is paid within forty days from the time the transaction is entered into. The UK importer cannot get to Brazil to make the payments but there is a way that the exporterââ¬â¢s bank can communicate with the importer so that the credit can be transferred. However, the buyer does not want any undue risks so he does not offer cash to his bank but asks for a letter of credit to be drafted with the Brazilian coffee exporter as the beneficiary. The UK bank makes an arrangement with this importer and because he satisfies the conditions required, the bank drafts a letter of credits and transfers it to the beneficiaryââ¬â¢s bank in Brazil. That advising bank then verifies the details of and terms of the letter of credit and duly pays the exporter. Once this is done, it is all to the exporter to ship the coffee beans to the UK. Only then can the advising bank (the exporterââ¬â¢s bank) be able to seek for the payment for the goods in accordance with the terms and conditions of the letter of credit. As can be clearly seen, there are so many processes involved and it all boils down to four main players who are bound to lose or benefit. There are the bank of the exporter, the bank of the importer, the exporter and the importer. Commercial Letter of Credit and Standby Letter of Credit It is always important to draw a distinction between two types of letters of credit commonly used in international trade and to ascertain the roles each plays towards enhancing payments for imports by a customer.[4] The commercial letter of credit is the most widely used and its use is restricted to the actual exchange of credit on behalf of the customer of a bank. It is the commercial letter of credit that will be needed by the advising bank or the exporterââ¬â¢s bank in order to effect payments. However, owing to the risks to the issuing bank regarding defaulting on the part of the importer who is also its customer, the issuing bank usually drafts and issues another letter of credit for the purposes of proving the credit worthiness of the importer. This particular letter of credit, therefore, serves the function of guaranteeing the advising bank and the exporter that the importer will actually pay for the goods. This reduces the risks inherent in international trade.[5] Based on this fact, it can be fairly argued that an issuer of the commercial letter of credit will be protected significantly in the event of failure by the beneficiary to adhere to the terms and conditions of the letter of credit. To a significant level, having the standby letter of credit protects the issuer because it cannot be allowed to pursue the property of the importer and recover the money; or it can fail to pass the money to the advising bank. In accordance to the UCP provisions, the banks are protected only mildly when it comes to failure by trader to honor their part of the contract regarding payments to be submitted. For instance, the UCP never really form part of the official international trade rules and are only applicable when the parties to the trade deal believe it is right for them. The absence of a clear law, therefore, that emphatically seeks to help issuers of letters of credit means that they are exposed to many risks. The law in this country regarding international trade in general and letters of credit in particular tend to offer protection to consumers more than the issuer of the letters of credit. It is almost always believed that banks have the right and the capacity to set up their own terms and conditions which they believe are sufficient enough to protect them from any acts of fraud by traders; and as such not a lot of protection is offered them under the law. International trade law will also protect the local bank and not the foreign bank, meaning that in the event the local bank, which is the issuer of the letter of credit, has already passed on the money to the advising bank, then there is little that can be done to recover the money especially in cases where the trader fails to honor the obligations to pay the bank due to bankruptcy or any other reason. This is because the law on bankruptcy protects the importer from the actions of banks that can lead to further legal battles. If such an importer files for bankruptcy during the period when the goods are yet to be delivered to him, then there is nothing the bank can do to recover its money.[6] A person declared bankrupt is protected from his debtors until at such a time when the bankruptcy can be lifted. This clearly renders the issuer of the letter of credit to such a trader incapable of recovering its owed monies. [1] Campbell, Dennis. REMEDIES FOR INTERNATIONAL SELLERS OF GOODS [2008] Volume II. Series Pass Voltage Regulator From Discrete Electronic Engineering Essay
Series Pass Voltage Regulator From Discrete Electronic Engineering Essay The objective of this project was to construct and design a 9V à ± 0.3V, 1A series pass voltage regulator from discrete electronic parts. The voltage regulator must exhibit a voltage regulation of 5% or better and should be supplied with a dc input voltage. The regulator circuit was required to include a way to disconnect the load from the regulator if the load current exceeded 1A or if the temperature of the series pass element exceeded 40à °C. It was necessary to measure each parameter of the circuit and convert it from an analog to a digital signal. This signal would provide data necessary to display the values on the Spartan III FPGA Development Board. The numerical display was not to have any zeros leading a number, unless it affected the value. Also, the display was to be cyclic, alternating at 5 second intervals. The circuit was designed, built and tested. It produced 9.03V output and 1.02A through a 9à ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦ load. The cut-off protection worked as well as the variable sensing circuitry. The linkage of the analog and the digital components, however, remain incomplete. An unregulated voltage such as this could cause damage to many household appliances and electronic devices. Therefore it is a safety hazard. A voltage regulator is a device that maintains a relatively constant output voltage for a varied input voltage. It functions by comparing the output voltage to a fixed reference and minimizing this difference with a negative feedback loop. The aim of this project to design a series pass voltage regulator with an output of 9 à ± 0.3V and regulation of at least 5%. It should be able to disconnect the load from the regulator for temperatures exceeding 40à ¢Ã à °C and a current greater than 1A. Using A/D converters, these values (output regulator voltage and current, temperature of the series pass transistor) were converted to digital format and displayed on the Spartan III FPGA Development Board. Each value received from the analog component should be displayed with no unnecessary leading zeroes. The display had to alternate between different variables of voltage, current and temperature. The Digital Component of this project was designed in Xilinx ISE 7.1i, and the necessary tests were carried out. A User Constraints file was created, which allowed for the programming of the FPGA Board. BACKGROUND THEORY AND LITERATURE REVIEW Using an unregulated power supply is unfeasible for most tasks. This is because as the load current increases, the ripple voltage increases and the DC output voltage decreases. The voltage regulator greatly reduces ripple and produces a steady output voltage for a range of input voltages. Different types of voltage regulators have different functions. There are two main types, shunt and series voltage regulators. Shunt Voltage Regulator For a shunt voltage regulator, the regulating device is placed in parallel with the load. A resistor is placed in series with the load and the unregulated supply. The current is varied through the control element depending on the load current. This causes a voltage drop across the resistor in series, maintaining a constant load voltage. (Prof. Gift, 2012) Figure : Shunt Voltage Regulator Shunt Voltage Regulator Example: Zener Diode Regulator Figure : Zener Diode Voltage Regulator The zener diode is a semi-conductor diode designed to operate in the reverse-biased region. In forward bias, it functions as a normal diode but when in reverse bias, it breaks down for voltages exceeding the breakdown voltage, or zener voltage. For operation in this region a current Iz is required where the limits being the minimum and maximum current for the diode to operate without breaking down. (Prof. Gift, 2012) Series Voltage Regulator For a series voltage regulator, the regulating device is placed in series with the load and the unregulated supply. (Prof. Gift, 2012) The output voltage is sampled by a circuit that provides a feedback voltage to be compared to a reference voltage. If the output voltage increases, the comparator circuit provides a control signal to cause the series control element to decrease the amount of the output voltage, thereby maintaining the output voltage. If the output voltage decreases, the comparator circuit provides a control signal to cause the series control element to increase the amount of the output voltage. (Electronic Devices and Circuit Theory 7th Ed.) Figure : Series Voltage Regulator There are different circuit topologies for the series voltage regulator. These will be examined next. Simple Series Transistor Regulator To improve the current capacity of the zener diode regulator, a transistor is used in the emitter follower configuration. This acts as the series control element. The collector is supplied by the regulated voltage. The transistor reduces the load current capacity of the zener by a factor of the transistor current gain. The zener voltage is therefore produced at the emitter. The equation IC = ÃŽà ²IB is used to link the collector current and the base current. Due to high current gain, even very large changes in IC result in only small changes in IB. This means IZ is mostly stable. The input voltage must be greater than the diode voltage to ensued proper transistor bias. (Prof. Gift, 2012) Figure : Simple Series Transistor Voltage Regulator IZ current through the zener diode IC collector current IB base current Discrete Voltage Regulator A transistor Tr2 is connected as the series pass transistor and another one Tr1 acts as the error amplifier. In the single transistor regulator output ripple voltage is low, but the output voltage still varies. This is due to the VBE/IC characteristic of the transistor. Feedback is used to correct the output. This amplifier compares the sampled voltage with a reference voltage in order to generate a signal proportional to the difference. This is used to drive the series pass element, which then varies the output voltage such that the error is reduced and the output voltage regulated. Figure : Discrete Transistor Voltage Regulator The voltage across the series element is (Vin Vout). The input voltage to the error amplifier is ÃŽà ²Vout Vref, where . The output voltage across the series element is an amplified version of the input voltage, . If Vref is constant, . This is the stability factor. This means that the ripple voltage is reduced by a factor of . The higher the loop gain, AÃŽà ², the better the regulator performance. A is gain of error amplifier. The resistor R can be connected to the regulated side of the circuit to improve the design and decrease ripple voltage. Also, a capacitor may be placed in parallel to the Zener diode. Another capacitor can be placed across the output removing output noise and input impedance at high frequencies. A Darlington Pair may be used as the series element. This has two transistors in a single package. The Darlington Pair increases the current gain of the series element, making it able to supply a larger load current if required. (Prof. Gift, 2012) Operational Amplifier Series Voltage Regulator In order to improve the regulator performance, the loop gain A is increased. A simple method of doing this is to replace the transistor error amplifier with an operational amplifier as shown in figure 6. The operational amplifier compares the reference voltage of the zener with the feedback voltage sampled by resistors R1 and R2. The Darlington Pair design is used here and R3 connected to the regulated supply to reduce the ripple voltage. The operational amplifier (op amp) must be supplied by the unregulated input voltage. DESIGN APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY Project Requirements: Design and build a 9V à ± 0.3V, 1A Series Pass Voltage Regulator using discrete electronic components. Regulator must have a voltage regulation or 5% or better and must be fed by a dc input voltage from a laboratory power supply. In addition, the regulator must incorporate temperature and over current sensing circuits which would disconnect the load from the regulator, for temperatures and currents exceeding 40 degrees centigrade and 1 A respectively. The output regulator voltage and current, together with the temperature of the series pass transistor must be converted to digital format using A/D converters and displayed on the Spartan 111 FPGA Development Board when selected. The following specifications must be met for the display of the variables: 1. The units of all variables are to be displayed along with the respective reading. 2. The voltage is to be displayed to 1 decimal point. 3. The current is to be displayed to 2 decimal points. 4. The temperature is to be displayed as a whole number. 5. The display of the readings for voltage, current and temperature are to automatically appear in a cyclic manner, with each reading being displayed for 5 seconds. 6. All leading zeros are to be suppressed. (ECNG 2004 Design Project Description) This design had both an analog and a digital component. ANALOG COMPONENT This component involved the design and construction of the Series Pass Voltage Regulator and the sensing circuitry to detect current, voltage and temperature. These sensors were constructed to relay the values necessary for the digital component. Analog to Digital Converters were designed to convert the analog output from the current, voltage and temperature sensing circuits to digital format so as to be to be read by the Spartan FPGA Board. Design of the Operational Amplifier Series Voltage Regulator Figure : Circuit Diagram of the Operational Amplifier Series Voltage Regulator The regulator was powered by a DC input voltage from a laboratory power supply. The voltage used in the design process for the purpose of calculation was 15 volts. Choosing the Zener Voltage and Zener Current The Zener Voltage, Vz was supplied by the Zener Diode, D1 as shown in Figure 7 above. The Zener Voltage was used as a reference voltage by the Operational Amplifier. The op amp is functioning as a differential amplifier in this situation. The difference between the inputs at the inverting and non-inverting terminals is amplified. Gain, The output voltage, VZ zener voltage Vz should be high enough so that gain would not decrease to achieve the required output. If Vz was too high, i.e. the output voltage, no current would flow through D1. An appropriate value between 0V and 9V was chosen, VZ = 4.8V. The IN4732 Zener Diode was chosen and the specification sheet for this model was obtained. The specified test current was 53mA, and the chosen value was 40mA. This was chosen to ensure proper bias. Calculating Resistor R3 The resistor R3 was in series with the Zener Diode. Therefore, the current through them is the same. A 100 à ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦ resistor was chosen as it was the closest one in value available in stores. R3 = 100à ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦ Calculating Resistors R1 and R2 Resistors R1 and R2 formed a potential divider providing the inverting input of the op amp. This sampled the output and sent it to the error amplifier. If the value of the output changed from the designed, the voltage drop across the resistors would change and the op amp input voltage would change, producing an error voltage at the output of the op amp. This error voltage will either turn on more or turn off more Transistor Tr1 and effectively Tr2 as well. The output voltage, Vo is related to the Zener Voltage by the equation below. Substituting Vo = 9V and Vz = 4.8V, Therefore, If R2 chosen to be 10kà ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦, then Therefore, R1 = 8.8kà ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦ and R2 = 10kà ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦. Choosing an Operational Amplifier The LF351 op-amp was chosen for this design. It only needed to function as a differential amplifier. Choosing the Series Pass Transistor The required output current was 1 Ampere. Therefore the maximum collector current of the series pass transistor had to be greater than 1 A. high power transistor was needed, but the current gain of power amplifiers is low (approximately 40). The base current and collector current for a transistor are related by the following expression. Substituting Current gain, hfe = 40 and Ic = 1 A, The LF351 op amp could not supply this base current. A Darlington Pair arrangement was used instead. Darlington Pairs have high current gain. The high power transistor chosen was TIP31C, packaged in a TO-220 Case. The current gain, hfe1 of this transistor was specified to be between 10 and 50, so a value of 30 was used. An NPN medium power transistor, BFY51 in a TO-39 metal package, was chosen for Tr2 in Figure 6. The current gain, hfe2 was found to be 123. Hence, total current gain of the Darlington Pair: hfe1 ÃÆ'- hfe2, i.e. 30 ÃÆ'- 123 = 3690. Substituting Current gain, hfetotal = 3690 and Ic = 1 A, Design of the Voltage Sensing Circuit The purpose of the Voltage Sensing Circuit was to determine the output voltage of the regulator and relay this voltage to the Analog to Digital Converter input. The Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) chip (ADC08040 IC) had a reference voltage of 4.5V. The maximum voltage possible was 9.5V. Hence if the voltage output was 9.5V, the ADC08040 input voltage should be 4.5V. VO had to be stepped down by a potential divider before it could be sent to the ADC08040. It was stepped down by a factor of . Let R1 = 1kà ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦, then R2 = 1kà ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦ This voltage was sent to a Unity Gain Voltage Follower (Figure 8) and was input to the ADC circuit. (Prof. Gift, 2012) Voltage Sensor.bmp Figure : Voltage Sensing Circuit Design of the Current Protection Circuit The purpose of this was to disconnect the load from the regulator when the current flowing through the load surpassed 1A. The protection circuit monitored the load current and sent a signal to a device to disconnect the load, when the current rose to over 1A. A 1à ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦ shunt was used in series with the 9à ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦ load resistor. The shunt voltage was used to determine cut-off. An instrumentation amplifier was chosen (INA114AP) to compare the temperature sensor voltage and a potential divider voltage. The shunt voltage was amplified to increase chances of accurate determination of when to disconnect the load. A potential divider was constructed to deliver a4V, and the shunt voltage was also amplified to 4V. Potential Divider: Which gives: Let R1 = 20kà ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦ The voltage from the shunt was amplified to 4V as well, and this was done by an op-amp and two resistors set up in the non-inverting amplification configuration shown below. The reference used to be amplified was 0.9V from the shunt, as this was the value which, if exceeded, cut-off and disconnection of the load was supposed to occur. For an non inverting amplifier, Vo = 4V, Vi = 0.4V, And Let R1 = 2.4kà ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦, R2 = 8.2kà ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦ .Temperature Amp Input to INA.bmp Figure : Circuit for Comparison and Determination of Cut-off When both inputs have the same voltage across them, the instrumentation amplifier would have an output of zero. The transistor in Figure 10 would be turned off and the base would be at 0V. The transistor used was a 2N3904 (Ic = 200mA). If the output is non-zero, the base would be driven by a voltage and the transistor will be ON. When the output is zero (same inputs) the transistor would be OFF and the relay coil would be grounded through the transistor. Current would flow through the coil, producing a magnetic field, and the relay would latch. When the instrumentation amp inputs are different, the output would saturate at +Vcc, i.e. 9V. The coil would an equal voltage at either end and so would have no voltage drop across it, meaning no current flowing through it. The relay is effectively OFF. There is a Normally Open (N.O.) Switch between pins 2 3, and 7 5 of the relay as well as Normally Closed (N.C.) Switches across pins 2 3 and 7 6. The N.O. switches close and the N.C. switches open when the relay latches. The load was connected across the N.C. pins. When the instrumentation amp has the same inputs, (zero output), and there is a voltage drop across the coil, current flows and the relay latches, disconnecting the load from the circuit. The relay had a rated voltage of 6V and the coil had a measured resistance of 70.5à ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦. The relays, however, were actually found to latch at a voltage of 3.2V. Therefore for calculation purposes 3.5V is used = 49.6mA was needed to latch the relay. A potential divider was used to provide the required voltage for the relay. For a resistor R3, This caused a voltage drop across the coil, larger enough to activate the coil when necessary. The voltage across resistor R3 is given by, For Ic = 49.6mA, The Base Current of the transistor is given by For Ic = 49.6mA, and hfe = 100, To bias the base of the transistor for the 9V output of the op-amp, A 16kà ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦ resistor was used. This would change VBE of the transistor. The new VBE was well within the operating range required for the resistor. Temperature Cutoff.bmp Figure : Current Protection Circuit Design of the Current Sensing Circuit The Current Sensing Circuit determined the voltage regulator output load. This value of current would be received by the ADC input. The ADC chip (ADC08040 IC ) was 4.5V. The Current LUT could convert a maximum of 1.29A. This means when the regulator reaches 1.29A, the ADC will be at 4.5V. A 1à ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦ shunt resistor was placed in series with the load. The 9V regulated output would now be applied to a combined load of 10à ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦. Voltage drop across the shunt: Therefore: The output voltage across the shunt is 0.9V. This will correspond with the maximum voltage which will give all 1s at the ADC output. Thus the voltage must be stepped up using a non-inverting op-amp. The voltage of 0.9V was stepped up to 4.5V. This means the gain is = 5 Let R1 = 2k à ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦. Therefore, R2 = 8kà ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦ The potential divider voltage was passed through the amplifier and then input into the ADC. Current Sensing Circuit.bmp Figure : Current Sensing Circuit Design of the Temperature Protection Circuit This disconnects the load from the regulator when the temperature of the Power Transistor (TIP31C) reached 40à °C. The Power Transistor temperature was monitored and at 40à °C, a signal would be sent from the circuit to a device, disconnecting the load. The LM35DZ was chosen. Its sensitivity was 10mV/à °C. At 40à °C, the temperature sensor output would be 0.4V. An instrumentation amplifier (INA114AP) was chosen to compare the temperature sensor voltage and the potential divider voltage. For a more accurate determination of the load, the temperature sensor output voltage was amplified. The potential divider delivered a voltage of 4V, and the sensor output voltage was also amplified to 4V. Therefore: Let R1 = 20kà ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦ An op amp and two resistors were used to build a non-inverting amplifier in order to set the temperature sensor voltage to 4V. The reference voltage was 0.4V, since it is at this point cut-off should take place. For a non-inverting amplifier: , , Let R1=1kà ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦ and R2=9kà ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦, Temperature Amp Input to INA.bmp Figure : Amplifier Circuit for Comparison and Determination of Cut-off . When both input voltages are the same, the amplifier output would be 0V, turning off the transistor. (No VBE present). A 2N3904 transistor was used (Ic = 200mA), so the current would be large enough to latch the relay. If the amplifier output is not 0V, there would be a voltage drop across the base and the transistor would be ON. When the amplifier output is 0V, the transistor would be OFF, grounding the relay, causing current flow in the coil, latching the relay. When the amplifier inputs are at different levels, the output saturates at +Vcc = 9V. Equal voltages exist at both ends of the coil, so no current flows hence the relay is OFF. A Normally Open (N.O.) Switch exists across pins 2 3, and 7 5 of the relay. Normally Closed (N.C.) Switches exist across pins 2 3 and 7 6. The N.O. switches close and the N.C. switches open upon latching. Consider this load connected across the N.C pins and the amplifier has equal inputs. The amplifier output is 0V, causing a voltage drop across the relay coil, causing current flow and latching of the relay. It follows then that the load is disconnected from the circuit. For a resistor R3, R3 was used to activate the coil by creating a voltage drop across it. For Ic = 49.6mA, For biasing, A 16kà ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦ resistor was used instead. Temperature Cutoff.bmp Figure : Temperature Protection Circuit This circuit was designed to relay the temperature of the power (TIP31C) to the ADC input. The ADC chip (ADC08040 IC ) reference voltage was 4.5V. The Temperature LUT could convert up to 129à ¢Ã à °C. At this temperature, the ADC should be 4.5V. A Temperature Sensor (LM35DZ) in a TO-92 package used to determine the temperature. This had a sensitivity of 10mV/à °C. At 129à °C, VO = 1.29V. Sensor output voltage was stepped up using a non-inverting op amp by a factor of , Let R1 = 1k à ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦. R2 = 2.49kà ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦ à ¢Ã¢â¬ °Ãâ 2.5kà ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¦ The sensor voltage was amplified and input into the ADC. Temperature Sensing Circuit.bmp Figure : Temperature Sensing Circuit A copper strip board was used to build the voltage regulator circuit since the solderless breadboard could only take up to 0.5A. Inputs: Voltage Supply of 15V Outputs: Voltage Sensing Output OV Ground Regulated 9V Output Temperature Sensing Voltage A voltage follower was used to buffer the output. The circuit was constructed as seen in figure 15: Figure : Complete Sensing and Cut-off Circuit DESIGN OF THE ANALOG TO DIGITAL CONVERSION CIRCUIT An 8 bit representation was used with reference to the 4.5V signal. The analog signal was converted to a digital signal from the 3 sensing circuits using the schematic shown below. Analog to digital conversion was done using the. A resistor pack was used to provide over current protection. This circuit was built and tested for each of the three sensing circuits. A combination of LEDs was used for the input of the analog voltage. AD Converter Circuit.bmp Figure : Schematic for ADC control configuration Op amps were used to buffer the inputs. The outputs were mapped onto the respective pins of the 40-pin IDE cable used to interface with the Spartan III Board. Figure : 40 Pin Expansion Connector (Spartan III Toolkit Datasheet) Data was transmitted using these pins to the ADC. DIGITAL COMPONENT The FPGA board was programmed so as to use the Seven Segment Display. Xilinx ISE 7.1i was used to design and construct the display for all the variables. Design of the Basic Display Unit Multiplexers, Frequency Dividers, a Look up Table Device and a Binary Coded Decimal to 7-Segment Converter were used to create the Display Unit. The 16-bit 31 Multiplexer Multiplexers may have more than one input but usually have one output. A combination of numbers is assigned to each input pin. Using these combinations, the respective input data is sent to the output pin. Therefore the bits that are chosen which input data set to display. In this design, two multiplexers were used, a 4-bit 41 and a 16-bit 31 multiplexer. 31 means 3 data inputs, 16- bit means each input is of 16 bit capacity. 16bit3to1muxschem.bmp Figure : Schematic Diagram of a 16-bit 3 to 1-line Multiplexer The 4-bit 41 Multiplexer The 4-bit 41 multiplexer can handle up to four combinations of inputs. To select which input is displayed, two bits are necessary. The output was a bus of width 4 bits. It split the 16 bit output into four sets of 4 bits. The 4-bit 41 multiplexer is shown in figure 19. 4bit4to1mux.bmp Figure : Schematic Diagram of a 4-bit 4 to 1-line Multiplexer Binary Coded Decimal (BCD) to 7-Segment Display Unit The BCD unit accepts four bits of data, e.g. D3D2D1D0, and determines which segments of the 7-segment display to turn on and off so as to represent the value of the input data. Figure 20 shows a 7-segment display. This type of display is common in electronic equipment e.g. calculators, microwaves, digital clocks. The Minimum Expressions for the BCD are: Seg_a = D3D2D1D0 + D2D1D0 + D3D2 + D3D1 Seg_b = D2D1D0 + D2D1D0 + D3D2 + D3D1 Seg_c = D2D1D0 + D3D2 + D3D1 Seg_d = D2D1D0 + D2D1D0 + D2D1D0 + D3D1 + D3D2 Seg_e = D0 + D2D1 + D3D1 Seg_f = D3D2 + D2D1 + D1D0 + D3D2D0 Seg_g = D3D2 + D3D1 + D2D1D0 + D3D2D1 For each expression, logic gate circuits were created. Each segment was then used to build the final BCD to 7-Segment Converter. The combinations of segments that would form the values were organised. The Look-Up-Table (LUT) This was used to determine which display unit anodes were to be turned on and off. There were four individual 7-segment displays. Each one had its own anode and as such could be controlled by choosing the anode of the respective display. lut.bmp Figure : Schematic Diagram of a Look-Up-Table (LUT) Modulo 4 Counter The Modulo 4 counter was used to perform automatic cycling of the anodes to be displayed. Switching of characters takes place so fast it appears that all the displays are on at the same time. The speed of switching is called the frequency divider (in this case 1kHz). This activates the modulo 4 counter which causes the LUT to choose one of four inputs to be chosen from the 4-bit 4 to 1 multiplexer to send to the 7 segment display. The Combined Display Unit Data Unit.bmp Figure :Schematic Diagram of the Display Unit Upgrade of the Display Unit to display the Decimal Point The LUT controls the switching of the anodes on the four 7 segment displays. Each 7 Segment Display has a decimal point that can be turned on or off if necessary. This was necessary in this project when displaying voltage and current. For a voltage, the decimal point is on the 3rd anode, a2. 0 9. 0 V For a current, the decimal point is on the 4th anode, a3. 0. 9 9 A This means that the point will only be on when S0 and S1 select to display voltage or current, and when the third or fourth anodes are on respectively. The Essential Prime Implicants were chosen from a truth table and the minimized expression was produced as follows: The Logic Gate circuit was constructed as shown below and implemented in Xilinx ISE 7.1i. A Macro was then created and connected appropriately in the Updated Display Unit Schematic. Decimal Point Upgrade.bmp Figure : Logic Gate Circuit for Decimal Point Upgrade Upgrade of the Display Unit to display the Units for each Variable The Display Unit was upgraded a second time in order to allow the units of each parameter to show Parameter Unit Symbol for Unit Voltage Volts V Current Amperes A Temperature Degrees Celsius à ¢Ã à °C Table : Parameters to be Displayed and their Respective Units The BCD Converter had to be updated to ensure when certain select bits were chosen, the segments would align to form the unit symbol on the first anode. Since there are four select inputs, D3D2D1D0 , there are 16 possible combinations of these bits forming different outputs. 0000 to 1001 in binary form represents 0 to 9 in decimal form. This means that there are combinations 1010 to 1111 to choose from to display a unit. 1101 was chosen for voltage, 1110 for current and 1111 for temperature. Figure : Common

The Death Of Abraham Lincoln - The Pinkey Or The Bullet :: essays research papers fc
Lincoln à à à à à Many people ââ¬Å"thinkâ⬠that they know about the Lincoln assassination. There are two theories on the death of Abraham Lincoln. The first theory is that of John Wilkes Booth shooting Lincoln in the cerebrum. The second theory is that a doctor misplaced his pinkie finger when assisting Lincoln to a hospital. Many people believe that the doctorââ¬â¢s finger actually pushed the bullet further into Lincolnââ¬â¢s brain, leading to his death. This research paper will compare and contrast the different theories and viewpoints about how Lincoln was assassinated. (Norton) à à à à à Abraham Lincoln was born on Sunday, February 12, 1809, in a log cabin in Kentucky. In his early life, he worked jobs including; running a store, surveying, and serving as a postmaster in New Orleans. There, Lincoln lived, worked, and he even wrestled the town bully, earning him the nickname, ââ¬Å"Honest Abeâ⬠. Later on in life, Lincoln got married to a woman named Mary Todd. They had four children; Robert (1843 - 1926), Edward (1846 - 1850), William (1850 - 1862), and Thomas (1853 - 1871). Later on, Lincoln became an attorney, decided to settle down and buy a house in Springfield. (Norton) In 1846 Lincoln ran for the United States House of Representatives and won. He was well known throughout the political world for his opposition to the Mexican War and his will to put an end to slavery. In 1860, Lincoln won on the third ballot and was elected the 16th President of the United States on November 6, winning over Stephen A. Douglas. (Norton) à à à à à à à à à à On April 14, 1865, the Lincoln family attended a play entitled ââ¬Å"Our American Cousinâ⬠, at Fordââ¬â¢s Theater. At about 10:15 P.M. Lincoln was shot in the brain by John Wilkes Booth. à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à Booth was the ninth out of ten children. He was born in Bel Air, Maryland in 1838. Booth was an actor and chose not to fight in the Civil War, his sympathies lay with the South and against President Lincoln. As the Confederacy began to lose, Boothââ¬â¢s hatred of Lincoln became stronger and stronger. He eventually began to plot against the President. Booth fired a single shot - .44 - caliber Derringer into Lincolnââ¬â¢s head, behind the left ear (according to the book, ââ¬Å"True Crime: Assassinationâ⬠), by the editors of Time - Life Books. Orson Welles :: essays research papers
Orson Welles Orson Welles was an actor, producer, director, writer, and columnist who revolutionized the film industry by directing movies that depicted men and woman as real human beings. Throughout his writing career, Wellesââ¬â¢ characters reflected his own personality and inspired others to write about human struggles, both good and bad. An innovative, dynamic individual, Welles spent his entire life experimenting with different mediums and bringing to the world his vision of manââ¬â¢s never ending struggle to conquer his own inner demons. Welles was a man whose life was one of paradox. His films reflected his inner conflicts and his attempt to assuage the two extremes of his own existence. "For thirty years people have been asking me how I reconcile X with Y! The truthful answer is that I don't. Everything about me is a contradiction and so is everything about everybody else. We are made out of oppositions; we live between two poles. There is a philistine and an aesthete in all of us, and a murderer and a saint. You don't reconcile the poles. You just recognize them." [To Kennety Tynan, 1967] Orson Welles is often referred to as a "Renaissance man", an individual whoââ¬â¢s ambitious and concerned with revolutionizing multiple aspects of life. He was a prolific writer and talented actor who often appeared in his own productions. A gifted artist, Welles, coupled his abundant energy with an enthusiasm for life. He tried everything and was not afraid to take risks and to suffer the consequences of failures as well as the acclaims of success. While, some critics say that Welles could never top "Citizen Kane", such movies as "The Trial", "Touch of Evil", and "The Lady from Shanghai" are considered classics and monumental feats in cinema production. However, movies like "The Stranger", "Chimes at Midnights", and "Mr. Arkadin" were criticized as being "One-Man Band" shows where Welles glorified and engrandized himself. Wellesââ¬â¢ films reflect his ambivalent vision of life. He organized the Mercury Theater as the result of a feud with the Federal Theater Project after its attempt to sensor his work. Welles refused to bow to their demands to make his pro-labor play, The Cradle Will Rock, less political. Throughout the rest of his life, he preferred ostracism to compromise and often endured ridicule and condemnation rather than give in to the demands of those in authority. Welles utilizes very distinctive images that are extravagant and dynamic to convey his unique prospective.

Before we get started on the evolution of drones, you should get a better understanding of what exactly they are and their uses in todayââ¬â¢s world. What is a drone? A drone is a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) is pretty much a more advanced Rc plane, it is controlled and used from a controller/computer. The CIA director George Tenet approved uses of drones after the attacks that a cured on 9/11. The most popular drone that the US uses is the General Atomics MQ ââ¬â 1 predator. The US has more of these drones than any other. When they were first made they were solely for reconnaissance but now they carry a payload. The first drones deployed to Afghanistan were predators less than a month after 9/11. The second most popular drone is the MQ ââ¬â 9 Reaper, it is larger than the MQ- 1 and can carry a bigger payload. They started making them in 2007. Where do we send them too? We send most of our drones to Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia but we also have some in Libya, Afghanistan and Iraq. Drone strikes are stronger than you would think. The MQ ââ¬â 1 can carry two hellfire missiles that way about 20 pounds. They are able to pierce most armored vehicles. The reason we use MQ -1ââ¬â¢s is how accurate they are. They do not have a lot of collateral damage because they are more of a prà ©cis missile. The reaper on the other hand has a payload of up to 3,000 pounds and can carry hellfireââ¬â¢s and bombs up to 500 pounds. The blast radius of one of the MQ - 1 is up to 200 feet and it is a 50% that you will survive the blast. The closer you get to the blast the more likely the odds of you dyeing is. According to the Conflict Monitoring Center, in 2011 alone the CIA fired 242 Hellfire missiles in Pakistan, and at a cost of $68,000, that means the agency spent at ... ...ets through cameras and often deal with boredom and fatigue that can lead to mistakes. The military believes drones that identify targets would prevent attacks on incorrect targets and prevent accidents. However, there are no guarantees that machines would be any better at identifying targets than a human. One of my favorite new drones they are making is a large, cow-like machine that would be able to carry supplies and would follow a squad of soldiers over almost any type of terrain. The military also uses unmanned vehicles to investigate improvised explosive devices. I wouldnââ¬â¢t be surprised if in two or three decades we see robotic infantry or robotic cops on our own soil The idea of a machine that can think about targets is kind of scary. Machines are meant to be controlled by humans, not flying the friendly skies searching for the next target to blow up.

DBQ Pre AP World History Revised
However, there are multiple problems that arose, and they include social conflicts and agreements (Documents 1, 4, and 6), religious issues (Documents 5, 7, 8 and 9), and culture (Documents 2, 3 and 10). Part of the reasons for trouble involve social conflicts and disagreements, and the document was written for, or to explain about these problems (Documents 1, 4, and 6). For example, some people still believed in high and low castes. In Document 4, for example, someone from a low caste joined a high caste team. There were people that still believed that the caste system was an active part of society. Some people did not believe that this was right. Some people did not believe in people from different social classes being on the same cricket team. They may have thought that the lower castes were not as capable as the upper classes were. However, there were some people who may have thought that your place in society had nothing to do with your ability to play a sport, and should be in s ocial and educational life as well. Also, Document 1, we see social disagreements between different countries, because of the issues about the polo playing people damaging the field of the Indian cricketers. This shows that issues are taken to international levels if deed be. And once again in Document 6, there is noticeable anger between this Indian writer and the English. He is expressing that he feels offended by the ridicule that they (the team) are facing from the English. Another factor these documents could be expressing would be religious conflicts (Documents 5, 7, 8, and 9). In Document 8, Quadrangular cricket was a cricket tournament held in Bombay. The teams were divided up religiously, and because there were 4 teams, it was called quadrangular cricket. Some people thought that it was wrong for people to be playing religiously because hat was also a root of political tension. Document 8 expresses that, ââ¬Å"l can understand Matches between colleges, and Institutions, but I have never understood the reason for havingâ⬠¦ Religiously based teams. â⬠This just shows that people have their opinions, and that they have good reason for it. However, the fact that people still went ahead with the tournament also shows that there were those who felt that it was still alright to have religiously based teams.Document 7 is clearly presenting the idea that religious competition is simply wrong. They say that Quadrangular Cricket has simply generated into religious rivalry. Document 5 is explaining about the competitions between the Europeans, Hindus, Muslims, and Paris (or the Indian Zoroastrian). They are talking about the Quadrangular tournament, and that the religious competition was ââ¬Å"no less remarkable and I hope our Hindu brethren as sportsmen would be no less pleased but also rejoice at the Muslims winning the championship. And, this document shows that some people believe that the Quadrangular tournament was wrong, as it was in Document 8, o r that people take it the way that Document 7 did, and see that here was no need to get too upset about it, and that it was all just fair competition. And finally, Document 9 is expressing that when one country loses, sure the winning side can celebrate for their own victory, but still, they should feel bad for the country that lost, and not just enjoy themselves without thinking about the sorrow of the losing side. Some of the documents also explain cultural aspects and point of views of cricket (Documents 2, 3, and 10). For example, in the picture and text caption on Document 2, we see an Indian cricketer. This shows that people of efferent nationalities could enjoy the same Sport, and it could be done without any fighting or arguments. In Document 3, it explains how cricket unites people from different parts of the world, both rulers and the ruled. And, in document 10, we see how the idea of sharing a culture through the sport of cricket is expressed. The document also says that in countries like England, there are multiple sports, and that is simply not the case with India and Pakistan, because in those countries, there is one sport: cricket, and that is just one example of how ââ¬Å"We hare culture, we share a history, and we share o much. â⬠Each document has its own point of view, with some similarities and differences between each one. In Document 1, the point of view is from the Indian cricket players. This document was produced in 1 881, and the audience was the governor of the province of Bombay, India. This was a petition, or a letter to someone who was of authority. The message that this petition was trying to convey was that these cricket players were unhappy with the fact that a few English gentlemen were allowed to run their horses and play polo, on the only available cricket field, while over 500 native youths ere not permitted to use the grounds while the few gentlemen were playing polo. The reason for this feeling of anger was that the po lo players were ruining the cricket grounds, and that made the grounds unusable. Also, it seems that this petition is trying to appeal to the governor so that they can get what they want. This document seems to be heavily biased, based on the way that the writers were trying so hard to get the polo players off their grounds, and to show their frustration with the unfairness that was being permitted by England. In the second document, it seems that the point of view is neutral. There seems to be no bias, and there is a picture in the document, which is used as a visual aid. Overall, the document seems to portray a clear representation of a cricket player, and it seems to be for a report of some sort.In the third document, the point of view is a book excerpt. It seems that the excerpt is showing how Britain colonizes a country, and then seeks to unite the ruled with the rulers by playing cricket. It seems fair to say that the excerpt is expressing an idea about the ââ¬Å"civilizedâ⠬ way that Britain colonizes other lands. By introducing the game of cricket, it provides moral training and education that is valuable to the ordinary native, and much more efficient than traditional ââ¬Å"book' (formal) education. The fourth document is from an Indian newspaper. This document as a whole is representing someone trying to show what can be accomplished by certain people. In the document, we read about how someone from a low caste was admitted to a team made up of higher caste people. The writer of this document is trying to express that just because people come from different social classes does not mean that they cannot accomplish the same things as each other, as long as they apply themselves. There are people who would agree with that Statement. However, there is some personal bias. The writer of this document may have been written by someone that believed in equality. This is particularly due to the fact that the document is trying to explain that ââ¬ËThe cha mpion bowler of the Hindus is a leather worker. â⬠Skip ahead, and it says that, ââ¬Å"The upper-caste Hindus of an Indian cricket club found that although he was low-caste, his inclusion in the Hindu team would improve matters considerably with his pluck and spirit. They admitted him as their member. This is trying to push the fact that this person, while low caste, was able to get involved with higher caste people. The fifth document is one about a cricket team that lost. There is a lot of personal bias in this one.Based on the context of the document, it seems that the people that wrote the document were unhappy about what happened in this particular game. The document is expressing personal comments, which is fine. However, if one was to look for documents about the Quadrangular Tournament, they should approach this one with caution because of the religious bias that this document clearly has. There is something interesting about the sixth document. This document is an exc erpt from a monthly magazine article. However, the writer of this article is a supporter of the Nature XSL cricket club. This means that there is a bit of personal bias in this document. The point of view is unique because it tells how the English always consider them ââ¬Å"effeteâ⬠or ââ¬Å"ineffectiveâ⬠and on the cricket field they were able to prove themselves otherwise. Document 7 is from an editorial in the sports journal Indian Cricket, showing personal bias, and it is very noticeable. These people are trying to explain that ââ¬Å"Those happy days [Of cricket] are now gone, thanks to those self-seeking leaders who want to gain their ends by stirring up religious fanaticism. They are upset with Quadrangular Cricket, and they felt as though it did not have any benefit on the game, and rather endangered the healthy rivalry cricket. The bias here does have a lot of impact on the interpretation of the document because it adds a strong personal opinion about why this pe rson felt the way that they did. The point of view is interesting based on the source because it is an editorial. In an editorial, the writer is writing their personal opinion. Therefore, it is understandable as to why there is bias in this document. The eighth document was from, at the time very popular, Gandhi. Many people knew of this man, and he is still known very well today. He is expressing his opinion about the religiously based teams in cricket. He says that it is alright for ââ¬Å"colleges and institutionsâ⬠, but he said that he never saw why different religions would be competing each other, and he saw it as ââ¬Å"tabooâ⬠in sporting language and sporting manners. He clearly does not agree tit the religious divisions of the teams. This is true personal bias. However, the point of view is intriguing because of the fact that Gandhi has a point. He is making it clear about what the problem is with the tournament, and presents a good reason as to why he disagrees wi th this type of competition. Document 9 is a short, quick document. It was a short excerpt from the newspaper Muslim India. However, this short quote is very important as another example of bias, but not entirely personal. This bias is personal, and cultural bias. It said that when his country is defeated, other people celebrate. He thinks that they should be feeling sorrow for his country, rather than rejoicing their own victory. The point view should be taken into account because it is coming from someone who as passion for something in this case their country), and when they lose, they are very upset over it, and then the bias comes. However, in the end, it is someone's own writing in a newspaper, and the opinion can be justified based on the context of the document. The tenth document is explaining what cultural impact cricket has. This was written by the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman. He is explaining why cricket is o important in India and Pakistan. He explains that cricket i s not just one of several sports like England has.In India and Pakistan, cricket is the one sport. He is trying to express to people that cricket is a fundamental part of Indian and Pakistani culture. And, the fact that he is pushing aside political issues, just to express the importance of cricket in these two countries' societies, expresses the importance of this sport, and why he is trying so hard to explain that. Because there were so many points of view, there felt the need to see one more, and that would have been the necessary additional comment, and that would have been one more point of view about why the Quadrangular Tournament was wrong.

Having Callahan City as the location of choice for the ranches of these score names, multi- brand takingss from other municipalities sprout. acquire exchange outlets, are get laidd by separate members registered in a brand, which gained their birth dance orchestra of mongers. At first, a member leave behind need to register Is a brand. Or example, he/she needs to be a registered corpus for Nathan to place an govern immediately to the Nathan come apart. A Nathan dealer lead adjudge an option of purchasing the product by cash, with 22% give the axe, or placing an rule by deferred retribution which result give him/her 2 months to pay make headway. In purchasing products by cash, thither are no limits on pu rchase amount and no spare requirements. However, if a dealer wants to place an pitch by reference work, he/she needs to have a go bading account from any argot available inwardly the country. The Nathan weapon testament get at least 10 blank checks Initially which postdated 2 months later on the date of nightclub. By doing these, Nathan branch leave have a way to collect the amount needed for the placed golf-club when the due date arrives. Initially, a registered Nathan dealer ordain have a maximal credit limit of UP, 000 which means that he mess only order 22,000 worth of products by credit with corresponding 22% discount on all products. By doing this, and he can now be reason as a distributor. A distributor creates her own outlet which will hence be the place for her own dealers to go to, inquire, place a product order and pay their dues.Similar procedures are applied on almost every other transfer selling brand like Departure, Avon, MESS. develop selling outlets can manage or eater treble brands and can manage multiple singular dealers under one distrib utor. The outlets are the main affaire of the branch and the idiosyncratic dealers who are not heart-to-heart of reaching branches due to the distance amid them and the hustles of commuting Just to get products.Since these outlets are intended to grow, task of supervise the order and credit limits of its own dealers excessively grow. At legitimate, the distributors are using manual(a)(a) supervise of their dealers credit limit, orders and payments with an old fashioned journal brass on which they manually write down the list of attribute and payments of dealer. Although brand branches uses a software organization that is fork outd by the brand, the direct selling outlets are left with manual monitor of the attribute and gross gross gross revenue of their own dealers. At current status, there is no someone machine-driven placement that is created for the uses of these outlets since individual software of the brands are use solely for the branch operation. The outlet managers are left with the bare(a) work for monitor individual gross revenue and credit and the more dealers the outlet supports, the more paperwork the manager palms, the more likely benevolentity error will append in the numeration and monitor of the said gross revenue and assign. This accept aims to lessen the time organism spent in manually observe the sales, credit and product muniment documents by providing an accurate and machine-driven dust that will not only admirer handle these files and records but will also help the outlet managers look into projections future sales, get the clear view of the outlets carry throughance per month, see the dealers in constitution and performance and the dealers pending dues for them to take actions and important decisions immediately.
